About Winterpalooza

WINTERPALOOZA is our slate of programming for Winter 2021! The Y is offering a mix of indoor, outdoor, and virtual programming to serve our community and keep active during the winter months.

THREE KEY AREAS OF WINTERPALOOZA:
  • OUTDOOR: Outdoor program on our field and state-of-the-art outdoor basketball court, as well as tents and outdoor heaters to keep our community connected, safe, and healthy this winter!
  • INDOOR: Spaced out wellness center and pool, along with programming adhering to NJ Department of Health Guidelines.
  • VIRTUAL: A variety of virtual resources curated by youth development and health and wellness experts to keep our community strong and healthy.

This clinic will be led by Princeton University Assistant Coach, Jonathan Jones! A graduate
of Kean University, Jones was a first-team Division III All-American, and runner-up for Division III National Player of the Year. After college, Jones played three years of professional basketball overseas. Following his last season in Argentina, Jones began his coaching career in 2015. Since then Jones has coached at Elizabeth High School before moving to the Kean staff for two seasons as the Associate Head Coach until joining the Princeton University Men’s Basketball staff in 2018.

Join Princeton YMCA Sports & Camp Director, Derek Moorehead, outside on the field every Monday & Wednesday for some outdoor winter fun! Grab your friends and let’s play some soccer, basketball, frisbee, flag football, hockey, camp games, or even some gaga!

Teen Strength Outdoor Boot Camp is a fun, non-traditional way to get in shape and feel great! YMCA Boot Camp caters to all fitness levels from the beginner through advanced. Utilizing resistance training with strength equipment and body weight – along with cardiovascular training – giving each teen a full body workout.

Teen Strength Outdoor Boot Camp is designed to give each participant the platform to push each other and get the significant benefits that you deserve, which means increases in fitness and strength. The only fitness level required to participate in Teen Strength Outdoor Boot Camp is the one you have right now!

Join us, socially distanced, masked and bundled up under our tent where the fun is in the cards or on the game board! Bring your own Magic the Gathering decks, chess sets,
or even grab one of our own board games and enjoy a safe, outdoor, and fun time where youth can come together in a supervised by great area to interact with each other and YMCA Staff!  Pre-registration is recommended.

Stay active in the pool with various strength, core, and coordination exercises. Members should expect to stay within their specific zones of the pool, which will be marked off with lane lines and additional ropes. Every class is different from the rest!

Our swim lessons are about more than just techniques and skills. They are about nurturing swimming skills, developing self-esteem and creating positive experiences that will last a lifetime. Children develop confidence around water as they learn water safety skills, stroke technique, and discover the joy of swimming.

INDOOR JUDO WITH PRINCETON JUDO

Judo translates to “gentle way.” Judo teaches you to use the opponents weight and balance against them rather then forcing them in a direction. It is a sport, martial art and self defense that can be played by men and women, boys and girls of any age and size. Instructor, Cory Cuomo, has been leading Judo at the “Y” for over 25 years and now brings his son Baily on as a new instructor! Cory and Baily have worked hard to create a Judo program that follows all DOH Guidelines!

Join Princeton YMCA Sports & Camp Director, Derek Moorehead, and your favorite YMCA Basketball staff to take your basketball game to the next level. Similar to our outside program, this indoor skills & drills basketball lesson program will work on the tools necessary to be the best basketball player you can be.

Virtually join Princeton Family YMCA ACE Program Director, Michael Roseborough, every Wednesday to hear some stories from some pretty inspiring individuals. Paths to Success is a new series in which 6th-12th graders from all over can hear from successful people with diverse backgrounds sponsored by the Princeton Family YMCA’s ACE Program. PPS Students will receive Community Services Hours for their participation.

A MENTAL HEALTH BOOST WITH THE “HIP HOP DOC”

Take part in the Zoom event facilitated by Dr. Tyree Winters, AKA, “The Hip Hop Doc.” This program provides an enjoyable atmosphere for families to dance and exercise together. This virtual class is FREE and open to all! This event is intended for youth and adults of all ages to boost their mental and physical health together through popular songs and dancing. It’s easy to get the whole family involved! Dr. Winters is a clinical associate professor at St. George’s University School of Medicine and Rowan University School of Osteopathic Medicine. He is a board certified pediatrician who maintains a special interest in helping combat youth obesity.

This program helps people get back on track after the holidays. It also helps them to make 2021 the year they make their health a priority. Weekly weight checks and fitness and food journals are used. The OWC MVP workout is done via Zoom, and/or outside (when weather permits). Cardio for the heart, resistance training to tone and strengthen the body, and mind relaxing meditation at the end.
