I've seen the power the Y has to change and improve lives, as we put our values into action. Our membership dues are part of that, allowing people who might not otherwise be able to afford it to take part in the Y and its programs. It's a point of pride that we are able to offer so much more than a for-profit fitness club to everyone who comes through our doors, especially those who need financial support to make the Y a part of their quest for a healthier life.

I have lived in, and traveled to, a fairly lengthy list of places in my life, but for the past 18 years I’ve been fortunate to call Princeton home. It’s where my wife, Cathy, and I raised our children, but we were not new to the community when we moved here in 2000. We were coming back, having done our graduate school work at the Princeton Theological Seminary in the 1980s. In fact, Cathy was a lifeguard at the Princeton YMCA back then! So my family has a longstanding connection with the Y, where I’ve served in a number of volunteer roles, including two full terms on the Board of Directors.

A lot of words come to my mind when I think of the Princeton YMCA — community, healthy living, values, caring, respect and responsibility. But there’s another word I associate with the Princeton Y. Stewardship. The dictionary defines stewardship as the responsible overseeing and protection of something considered worth caring for and preserving. The Y has been part of my life since I was a young boy. Now I’m the father of three, and care deeply about opportunities for all children. I know the Princeton YMCA is the cornerstone of making a better, stronger community for all — and is certainly worthy of that protection, care and preservation.

I’ve been lucky enough to call Princeton home for more than 20 years, and for all of that time, the Princeton YMCA has been a mainstay of this vibrant community. People in the area have been coming to the Princeton Y for more than a century, always finding a place to learn, share, and grow. Now, the Y is growing in order to meet the changing needs of those it serves, and I’m proud to be supporting the effort.
